In reply to carolyn. If I understand your question correctly, you want to prevent soot from sticking to your cast iron skillet when you use it over an open fire, yes? Old school suggest coating the outside with bar soap by rubbing the soap over the surface of the skillet. This will allow the soap to be easily washed off. Hope that helps!

Gary, What is the best way to clean soot off of cast iron that is used on an open pit fire. I am going camping with a larger group and need to take one of my larger skillets that I use frequently on the home stove.
